What I learned today about this Tumblr thing
1. A few of my friends in a particular circle or two have Tumblrs and they’ve had them for quite some time.
2. I haven’t really been following anyone’s Tumblrs. This explains why I never know what those people with Tumblrs are talking about when we all get together. Apparently, I never did the reading assingments because I didn’t know there were any. Kind of like how I went through grad school.
3. A majority of those people’s posts seem to be reposts from other people followed by one or two comments. This begs the question: who has an original thought?
4. Everyone reposts about the same things but these are things I don’t really care about. No one outside these little circles care about them, either. However, these circles really do think the things they’re reposting about are quite important.
5. These Tumblr posts seem to be a waste of time but a lot of effort goes into them. The rise of Tumblr posts seems to have occurred with the start of the recession. Correlation or causation? You be the judge.
6. I used to think others had more important thoughts about the big picture than I. Turns out I was wrong, judging by the petty stuff people are thinking (or, at least rethinking from other people’s thoughts) a lot about. This makes me feel better about myself. I therefore see the appeal of this.
